The sum of ages of father and this son is 45 yrs.5 yrs. Ago the product of their ages is 124 yrs. Find the present age.

At present :

Age of the son = x ,

Age of the father = 45 - x ,

5 years ago :

Age of the son = ( x - 5 ) years

Age of the father = ( 45 - x - 5 )

= ( 40 - x ) years

According to the problem given ,

( x - 5 )( 40 - x ) = 124

=> x( 40 - x ) - 5( 40 - x ) - 124 = 0

=> 40x - x² - 200 + 5x - 124 = 0

=> - x² + 45x - 324 = 0

=> x² - 45x + 324 = 0

=> x² - 36x - 9x + 324 = 0

=> x( x - 36 ) - 9( x - 36 ) = 0

=> ( x - 36 )( x - 9 ) = 0

=> x - 36 = 0 or x - 9 = 0

Therefore ,

x = 36 or x = 9

Now ,

At present :

Age of the son = x = 9


=> Age of the father = 45 - x

= 45 - 9

= 36 years
