32

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the present ages of John and Mary be x and y respectively.

Sum of their ages,

x + y = 32-------------------(i)

4 years ago John's age = ( x - 4)

4 years ago Mary's age = (y - 4)

According to the problem,

2(x-4) = y - 4

=>2x - 8 = y - 4

=> y = 2x - 4 --------------------(ii)

Now putting the value of y in equation (i)

We get,

x + 2x - 4 = 32

=> 3x = 36

=> x = 12

Again,

12 + y = 32

=>y = 32 - 12

=> y = 20

Therefore,

Present age of John and Mary 12 years and 20 years respectively.

Answer:

Hence John = 20 years old and

Mary = 12 years old.

Step-by-step explanation:

As per first condition sum of John and Mary is =32

Hence John + Mary = 32

As per second condition four years ago John's age is double of Mary.

Let's find 4 years ago their age sum.

Four years ago their age is

32 - 8 = 24

Thus now consider condition second we get

John + Mary = 24

16 +8 = 24 …( condition second)

Hence now present age of John and Mary is

John + Mary = 32

20 + 12 = 32
