Solution:

At present:

mother's age = x years

daughters age = (45-x) years

/* Given sum of ages of mother and daughter is 45 years */

5 years ago :

mother's age = (x-5) years

daughters age = (45-x-5 ) years

= (40-x) years

According to the problem given:

The product of their ages was four times the mothers age at that time.

(x-5)(40-x) = 4(x-5)

After cancellation, we get

=> 40-x = 4

=> -x = 4 - 40

=> -x = -36

=> x = 36

Therefore,

At present :

mother's age = x = 36 years
