Five years ago :

The daughter : (x - 5) years

Mother : (x - 5)²

This equals : x² - 10x + 25

Current age :

Of daughter : X

Mother : X² - 10x + 25 + 5 = x² - 10x + 30

Sum of their ages :

X + (X² - 10X + 30)

X² - 9x + 30 = 40

X² - 9X - 10 = 0

The roots are - 10 and 1

X² + 1x - 10x - 10 = 0

X(X +1) - 10(X +1) = 0

(X - 10) (X + 1) = 0

X - 10 = 0

X + 1 = 0

X = 10 or - 1

Since age cannot be negative, we take 10

X = 10
