Given:

Sum of parent's age=70

To find:

The present age of parents

Solution:

The present age of parents is 37 and 33 years.

We can find the age by following the given steps-

Let us assume that the present age of the mother is X and of the father is Y.

We are given that the sum of their ages is 70.

So, mother's age+ father's age=70

X+Y=70 (1)

Now, we know that 20 years ago, the father was 4 years older than the mother.

Mother's age 20 years ago=Present age-20

=X-20

Father's age 20 years ago=Present age-20

=Y-20

So, (Y-20)=(X-20)+4

Y-20=X-20+4

Y-20=X-16

Y-X=20-16

Y-X=4 (2)

Adding equations (1) and (2),

Y-X=4

Y+X=70

2Y=74

Y=37

Putting the value of Y in (1),

X+37=70

X=70-37

X=33

The present age of mother=33 years

The present age of father=37 years

Therefore, the present age of parents is 37 and 33 years.
