According to question,

x + (1/x) = 17 / 4

(x^2 + 1 ) / x 17 / 4

4x^2 + 4 = 17x
4x^2 - 17x + 4 = 0

a = 4 , b = -17 , c = 4

D = b^2 - 4ac
= (-17)^2 - 4(4)(4)
= 289 - 64
= 225

By using quadratic formula,

-b + rootD / 2a or -b - rootD /2a

-(-17) + root 225 /8
17 + 25 /8
4


Or

-(-17) - root 225/8
17 - 15 / 8
1/4


So that the number is 4 and its reciprocal is 1/4
