Answer:

x/ y = 5/13

Step-by-step explanation:

et the number be x & demoninator be y..

x+y= 18.............(1)

x/y+2 =1/3

3x=y+2

x=(y+2)/3

put this value in eq 1

x+y=18

(y+2)/3+y=18

(y+2+3y= 18×3

4y+2 =54

4y=54-2

4y= 52

y= 52/4

y= 13

put the value of y in eq 1

x+y=18

x+ 13=18

x= 18- 13

x= 5

Hence req. fraction = x/ y = 5/13

Correct Question:

The sum of numerator and denominator of a fraction is 18. If the denominator is increased by 2 the fraction reduces to ⅓. Find the fraction.

_____________________________

Answer:

  • The fraction is 5/13.

Given:

  • The sum of numerator and denominator of a fraction is 18.

  • If the denominator is increased by 2 the fraction is reduced by ⅓.

To find:

  • The fraction:

Solution:

Let the numerator of a fraction be x and the denominator be y.

>> Fraction = x/y

According to the first condition.

⠀⠀⠀=> x + y = 18...(1)

According to the second condition.

⠀⠀⠀=> 1/3 = x/(y+2)

⠀⠀⠀=> y + 2 = 3x

⠀⠀⠀=> y = 3x - 2...(2)

Substitute equation (2), in equation (1), we get

⠀⠀⠀=> x + 3x - 2 = 18

⠀⠀⠀=> 4x = 20

⠀⠀⠀=> x = 5

Substitute x = 5 in equation (2), we get

⠀⠀⠀=> y = 3 (5) - 2

⠀⠀⠀=> x = 15 - 2

⠀⠀⠀=> y = 13

⠀⠀⠀>> The fraction = x/y = 5/13

The fraction is 5/13.
