let the childs age be x
his age 3 years ago= x - 3 --------------1

his age after 5 years = x +5 ------------2

sum of reciprocal of 1 and 2 ,
1/x-3 +1/x+5 = 1/3

    x+ 5 + x -3                  1
------------------------  =     ---
x^2+5x - 3x -15              3

  2 x  + 2              1
----------------   =  ----
x^2 +2x - 15        3

6x + 6 = x^2 + 2x -15

x^2 - 4x = 21

(x^2-7x) + (3x-21) = 0

x (x-7) + 3 (x-7)=0
thus,
x= 7
x= -3

age cannot be negative.so 7 is the answer

the childs age is 7.

hope it helps!!!
