The sum of the age of father and the son is 48 year . the quotient obtained by dividing the age of son by the age of father is 1/ 5 .find their ages.

Son age = 48 - x

(48 - x) / x = 1/5

240 - 5x = x

6x = 240

x = 40

fathers age = 40 yrs

son age = 48 - x = 48 - 40 = 8 yrs

Let the age of the father = x years

age of son = ( 48 - x ) years

according to the problem given ,

( 48 - x ) / x = 1/5

5( 48 - x ) = x

240 - 5x = x

240 = 6x

x = 240/6

x = 40

Therefore ,

age of the father = x = 40 years

age of the son = 48 - x

= 48 - 40

= 8 years
