the sum of the ages of A and B is 60 years. 10 years ago, A was thrice as old as B was.find ages of both.

A + B = 60 ______ ( 1 )

10 yrs ago,

Age of A = (A - 10) yrs

Age of B = (B - 10) yrs

(A - 10) = 3 ( B - 10 )

=> A - 10 = 3B - 30

=> A - 3B = 10 - 30

=> A - 3B = - 20 ______ ( 2 )

From eq. (1) - (2)

A + B = 60

- A + 3B = 20 ( - sign changes to + sign)

4B = 80

=> B = 80/4 = 20 yrs

Now ,

From eq. (1)

A + B = 60

=> A + 20 = 60

=> A = 60 - 20 = 40 yrs

Hence , the age of A is 40 yrs and

Age of B is 20 yrs .
