let the age of younger boy=x
so, the age of his brother= 12-x

Given,x²+(12-x)²=74
=x²+x²-24x+144=74
=2x²-24x+144-74=0
=2x²-24x+70=0
=x²-12x+35=0
=x²-5x-7x+35=0
=x(x-5)-7(x-5)=0
=(x-7)(x-5)=0
so,x will be 5 because he is younger.
so,age of the younger brother is 5 And of elder brother is 7.

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

So X+Y=12 so the ages are x and x+12 once you square and add them it should be 74 according to the given condition in the question :

x^2+(12-x)^2=74

after doing some basic algebra you will get x=5 and x=7

Both values are correct since they havent specified which is older or younger.
