Step-by-step explanation:

let let the present age of father be x

let the present age of his son be y

presently,

x + y = 72 ....(i)

after 2 years,

x+2 = 3(y+2) - 4

x+2 = 3y + 6 - 4

x +2 = 3y + 2

x - 3y = 0 .... (ii)

therefore on subtracting the two equations,

x + y = 72

-x + 3y = 0

4y = 72

y = 72

4

y = 18

therefore putting the value of y in equation (i),

x + y = 72

x + 18 = 72

x = 72 - 18

x = 54

therefore the present age of father = x

= 54

therefore the present age of his son = y

= 18
