Given:

➨sum of the ages of father and son = 85 years

➨5 years ago the father was twice as old as his son.

To Find:

present age of father and son

Solution:

Let the present age of father be "x"

Let the present age of son be "y"

then,

x + y = 85 (given)

fives years back,age of father = x - 5

five years ago,age of his son = y - 5

hence,

x - 5 = 2(y - 5)

thus we have:

★ x + y = 85 ........( 1 )

★ -x + 2y = 5........( 2 )

Adding both the equations,we have:

⟹3y = 90

⟹\tt\underline\red{y = 30}

This implies,

⟹ x = 85 - y

⟹ x = 85 - 30

⟹\tt\underline\red{x \: = \: 55}

Hence,

  • the present age of father = 55 years
  • the present age of son = 35 years
