The sum of the ages of a son and father is 56 years. After 4 years, the age of the father will be three times that of the son. What is the age of the son?

Let the age of father be x

Let the age of son be y.

Then , x + y= 56 - (i)

After 4 years,

x+4 = 3 (y+4)

x+4 = 3y+ 12

x= 3y+8 -(ii)

Using (ii) in (i) ;

3y + 8 +y = 56

4y = 48

y = 12

Thus , age of son is 12 years.
