The sum of the ages of Garfield, Tom and Jerry is 85 years. Tom is twice as old as Jerry was 5 years ago. Five years from now, Garfield's age will be 2/3 the sum of the ages of Tom and Jerry at that time. How old are they?

Answer:

Jerry is 23, Tom is 28. I subtracted the difference of their ages because once you do that, the number that is left is twice Jerry's age, which is 46. Jerry is therefore 23, and knowing Tom is 5 years older, we can add 5 to 23, which is 28.

51= x + y (when y= x + 5)

46= x + x ( subtracted 5 from both sides)

x = 23

51 = 23 + y (simple from here)

x = 23; y = 28
