let the age of maden and Mohan be x and y years respectively

so according to question

x + y = 16 ------------(1)

now

4 years ago madan age be x - 4

4 years ago Mohan age be y - 4

also madan was three times as old Mohan

according to question

x - 4 = 3(y - 4)

or x - 4 = 3y - 12

x - 3y = -12 + 4

x - 3y = -8 ---------(2)

then by substitution methord

here x is comman in both the term

by substacting equation 1 from 2

x - 3y = -8

x + y = +16

-4y = -24

y = 6

then to find x we but value of y in equation 1

so

x + 6 = 16. [ becoz y = 6 ]

x = 16 - 6

x = 10

therefore present age of madan = 10 and Mohan = 6
