Working this out algebraically:

Let the number by xy

The sum of the digits is 12:

x + y = 12     {equation 1}

The value of the number is 6 time the units digit:

6y = 10x + y

5y = 10x

y = 2x         {equation 2}

Since x+y = 12 and y = 2x we have:

x + 2x = 12

3x = 12

x = 4

y = 2x = 2(4) = 8

xy = 48
