Let us assume, x and y are the numerator and denominator of a fraction x/y
Given:
x + y = 8 ---------1
also given
x + 3 / y + 3 = 3/4
4 (x + 3) = 3 (y + 3)
4x + 12 = 3y + 9
3y – 4x = 3 --------------2
Multiply equation 1 by 4
4x + 4y = 32 ------------3
Add eqn 3 and eqn 2
7y = 35
y = 5
Therefore, x = 8 – y = 8 – 5 = 3
The original fraction = x/y = 3/5
