let mother's age be x and daughter's age be y

x+y = 50

x+20 = 2(y+20)

x-2y = 20

by elimination method

(x+y=50)×2

=2x+2y=100

x - 2y = 20

3x = 120

x = 40

y = 50-x

y = 50-40

y = 10
