Answer:

present age of father = 38 years

present age of son = 16 years

Step-by-step explanation:

let the present age of father = x

and present age of son = y

A.T.Q

x + y = 54 -------(1)

(x - 5) = 3(y - 5)

x - 5 = 3y - 15

x - 3y = -15 + 5

x - 3y = -10 -----(2)

on subtract eq 1 and 2

x + y = 54

x - 3y = -10

- + +

4y = 64

y = 64/4

y = 16

put y in eq 1

x + y = 54

x + 16 = 54

x = 54 - 16

x = 38

let the present age of father be y

and present age of son be y.

by question,

x+y=54

x=54-y------------(1)

5 years ago

father's age was (x-5)yrs

son's age was (y-5)yrs

(x-5)=3(y-5)

x-5=3y-15

x-5=3(54-x)-15

x-5=162-3x-15

x+3x=147+5

4x=152

x=152/4

x=38

present age of father is 38 yrs

present age of son is (54-38)yrs=16 yrs.
