The present age of man is 36 years and that of son is 9 years.

1) Let the age of man be x,

According to the first statement the age of son would be 45-x

2) According to the second statement, the product of their ages 5 years ago was 4 times the age of man.

Age of man 5 years ago = x-5

Age of son 5 years ago = 40-x

Equation : (x-5)(40-x)= 4(x-5)

3) Eliminating the common term from both sides, x=36
