The sum of the present ages of Varun and Kapil is 42 years. The ratio of their ages after 5 Years will be 15 : 11. What is the present age of Kapil?

Let the present ages of Varun and Kapil be x and y respectively.

According to the question;

x + y = 42. ..........(i)

After 5 years -

Varun's age = x + 5

Kapil's age = y + 5

Thus,

(x + 5) : (y + 5) = 15 : 11 \\  \\  \frac{x + 5}{y + 5}  =  \frac{15}{11}  \\ \\  \bf on \: cross - multiplying.. \\  \\ 11(x + 5) = 15(y + 5) \\  \\ 11x + 55 = 15y + 75 \\  \\ 11x - 15y = 75 - 55 \\  \\ \tt 11x - 15y = 20 \:  \: .......(ii)

On solving (i) and (ii),

The value of y is 17.

Hence, the present age of Kapil is 17 years.
