x and x+1 are the numbers

x^2+(x+1)^2=145

x^2+x^2+2x+1=145

2x^2+2x+1-145=0

2x^2+2x-144=0

divide all terms by 2

x^2+x-72=0

factor (9*8=72)

(x+9)(x-8)=0

x+9=0

x=-9 and x+1=-8, -8 and -9

x-8=0

x=8 and x+1=9, 8 and 9

you have 2 solutions

Think!

72 + 82 = 49 + 64 = 113

82 + 92 = 64 + 81 = 145
