Let the other number be X

now X+ 1/3 = 5/9
or, X = 5/9 - 1/3
or, X =( 5 - 3) /9
or, X = 2/9

So the other number is 2/9

Given - Sum and number

Find - Other number

Solution - Let the number be x.

 \frac{1}{3}  + x =  \frac{5}{9}

Shifting 1/3 to Right Hand Side

x =  \frac{5}{9}  -  \frac{1}{3}

Taking LCM we get 9

x =  \frac{5 - (1 \times 3)}{9}

x =  \frac{5 - 3}{9}

Performing subtraction

x =  \frac{2}{9}

Hence, the other number is 2/9.
