Let the numbers be x and y respectively

According to the question:-

x + y = 7...........(1)

xy = -60...........(2)

From equation (1)

x = 7 - y

Put the value of x in (2)

(7 - y)y = -60

7y - y² = -60

y² - 7y - 60 = 0

y² -12y + 5y - 60 = 0

y(y - 12) + 5(y - 12) = 0

(y - 12) (y + 5) = 0

y - 12 = 0

y = 12

y + 5 = 0

y = -5

Put the value of y in 1 , we get

When y=12

x + y = 7

x = 7-12

x = -5

When y = -5

x - 5 = 7

x = 12
