let the consecutive numbers be x,x+2,x+4

x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) = 42

3x + 6 = 42

3(x + 2) = 42

x + 2=42/3

x + 2=14

x = 12

therefore the numbers are

x=12

x+2=12+2=14

x+4=12+4=16

the middle number is 14.
