Let the 3 terms of the A.P be:

  • (a - d)
  • (a)
  • (a + d)

According to the question,

Sum of the 3 numbers = -3

⇒ (a - d) + a + (a + d) = -3

⇒ a - d + a + a + d = -3

⇒ 3a = -3

⇒ a = -3 ÷ 3

a = -1

Also,

Product of 3 numbers = 8

(a - d) a (a + d) = 8

a(a² - d²) = 8

-1(-1² - d²) = 8

-1(1 - d²) = 8

-1 + d² = 8

d² = 8 + 1

d² = 9

d = 9

d = ±3

Case 1:

♦ If a = -1 and d = 3,

A.P → (a - d), a, (a + d)

A.P → (-1 - 3), -1, (-1 + 3)

A.P → -4, -1, 2

Case 2:

♦ If a = -1 and d = -3,

A.P → (a - d), a, (a + d)

A.P → (-1 -(-3)), -1, (-1 - 3)

A.P → 2, -1, -4
