Answer:

Let the age of the son be x and the age of the father be y

3x+y=110 (eq 1)

x+3y=170 (eq 2)

Find y in eq 1

3x+y=110

y=110-3x

Substitute in eq 2

x+3y=170

x+3 (110-3x) = 170

x+330-9x = 170

-8x=170-330

-8x=-160

x=20

The son in 20 years old

Substitute x=20 in eq 1

3x+y=110

3 (20)+y=110

60+y=110

y=50

The father is 50 years old
