Let the smaller number be x

The larger number is x + 2

Given that their sum is 86

x + (x + 2) = 86

Remove bracket:

x + x + 2 = 86

Combine like term:

2x + 2 = 86

Take away 2 from both sides:

2x = 84

Divide both sides by 2:

x = 42

Find the number:

Smaller number = x = 42

Larger number = x + 2 = 42 + 2 = 44

Answer: The larger number is 44.
