Question :-

The sum of two consecutive multiples of 8 is 88. Find these multiples.

Now,

Let the first multiple be 8x and second multiple be 8 (x + 1).

Thus,

8x + 8 (x + 1) = 88

8x + 8x + 8 = 88

16x + 8 = 88

16x = 88 - 8

16x = 80

x = 80 ÷ 16

x = 5

Verification,

LHS = 8x + 8 (x + 1)

= 8 × 5 + 8 (5 + 1)

= 40 + 8 × 6

= 40 + 48

= 88

RHS = 88

LHS = RHS hence, verified.

Hence,

First multiple = 8x

= 8 × 5

= 40

Second multiple = 8 (x + 1)

= 8 (5 + 1)

= 8 × 6

= 48
