Let the 2 numbers be 3x and 5x.

3x + 5x = 240

8x = 240

x = 240/8

x = 30

Therefore 3x = 3*30 = 90 and 5x = 5*30 = 150.

The greater number is 150.

Hope it helps :)

Concept

Comparing two amounts of the same units and determining the ratio tells us how much of one quantity is in the other.

Given

Given that the sum of two natural numbers is 240 and their ratio is 3 is to 5

Find

We need to find the greater number

Solution

As according to the given statement that  the sum of two natural numbers is 240

So let the two numbers be x and y

Now,

x+y = 240 -------(1)

Also ,their ratio is 3 is to 5

That is x/y = 3/5

Therefore 5x = 3y------(2)

Now In equation (1)

x = 240-y-------(3)

Substitute the value of equation 3 in equation (2)

∴ 5 (240-y) = 3y

∴ 1200-5y = 3y

∴8y = 1200

∴y =150

Now substitute the value of y in equation (1)

x+150=240

∴x = 90

Hence the value of x is 90 and the value of y is 150

Therefore the greater number is y
