let the two numbers be x and y.

x+y=12=> x=12-y

x^2-y^2=12

(12-y)²-y²=12

=144+y²-24y-y²=12

=24y=144-12

y=5.5

x=12-5.5=6.5

difference of two number=6.5-5.5=1.

so answer is 1.
