Let assume that

  • First number be x

  • Second number be y

It is given that, HCF of x and y is 12.

So, it means there exist positive integers a and b such that

and

\rm\implies \:y = 12b \\

Further given that, sum of two numbers is 84

\rm \: x + y = 84 \\

\rm \: 12a + 12b = 84 \\

\rm \: 12(a + b) = 84 \\

\rm\implies \:a + b = 7 \\

Hence,
