65% of x = 85% of y

0.65x = 0.85y

This can be rewritten as

$x=\frac{0.85 y}{0.65}$

The value of x can be substituted in eq1 as follows:

$\begin{array}{l}{\frac{0.85 y}{0.65}+y=240} \\\\ {1.307 y+y=240} \\\\ {2.307 y=240} \\\\ {y=104}\end{array}$

Therefore, the other number is  

x = 240 - 104

x = 136

Therefore, the two unknown numbers are 136 and 104
