let the first number be x .....and second number is 10 more than the first number ..... second number is x+10

x+(x+10)=40
2x+10=40
2x=40-10
2x=30
x=15....

first number is x =15
second number is x+10=15+10
= 25.....

so the numbers are 15 and 25...
