The smaller number is 22.5 and the larger number is 37.5.

• Let the larger number be x, and the smaller number be y.

• It is given that the sum of the two numbers is 60.

=> x + y = 60 -(i)

• Three times of larger number = 3x

Five times of smaller number = 5y

• According to the question,

5y = 3x

=> y = 3x / 5

• Putting y = 3x / 5 in equation (i), we get,

x + (3x / 5) = 60

=> (5x + 3x) / 5 = 60

=> 8x / 5 = 60

=> 8x = 5 × 60

=> x = (5 × 60) / 8

=> x = 300 / 8

=> x = 75 / 2

=> x = 37.5

• Now, substituting x with 3.75 in equation (i), we get,

3.75 + y = 60

=> y = 60 - 37.5

=> y = 22.5

• Now, to cross-check the values, let us add the obtained values of x and y and see if the sum results to 60.

37.5 + 22.5 = 60

• ∴  The values are :

x = 37.5

y = 22.5
