Let the number be (x).

x + y = 8 ------- ( 1 )

x - y = 4 ---------( 2 ) [ x > y ]

x = 8 - y

Put x = 8 - y in ( 2 )

8 - y - y = 4

=> 8 - 2y = 4

=> - 2y= 4 - 8

=> - 2y= - 4

y = 2

Replace the value of y = 2 in the equation,

x = 8 - y

=> x = 8 - 2

=> x = 6
