Correct Question

The sum of two number is 80 and if the larger number exceed 4 times the smaller by 5.

Find out

  • The smaller number

Solution

Let the larger number be x and smaller number be y

According the given condition

✒Sum of two numbers is 80

  • x + y = 80 ----(i)

✒If the larger number exceed 14 times the smaller by 5

  • x = 4y + 5
  • x - 4y = 5 -----(ii)

Subtract both the equations

➟ (x + y) - (x - 4y) = 80 - 5

➟ x + y - x + 4y = 75

➟ 5y = 75

➟ y = 75/5 = 15

Putting the value of x in eqⁿ (i)

➟ x + y = 80

➟ x + 15 = 80

➟ x = 80 - 15 = 65

Hence,

  • Larger number = x = 65
  • Smaller number = y = 15

Answer:

Given:

→ The sum of two number is 80 and if the larger number exceed 14x smaller by the five.

Find:

→ What is the smaller number.

Calculations:

→ Let us assume x as larger number and y as lesser number.

___________________________________

\sf{x = 14x}

\sf{y = 5y}

___________________________________

\sf{x + y = 80}

\sf{80 - 5 = 75}

\sf{5y = 75}

\sf{y = \dfrac{75}{5}}

{\sf{\underline{\boxed{\red{\sf{y = 15}}}}}}

___________________________________

\sf{x = 80 - 15y}

{\sf{\underline{\boxed{\red{\sf{x = 65}}}}}}

Therefore, the smaller number is 15 and the larger number is 80.
