Let the numbers be a & b
a + b = 1000 .....(i)
a^2 - b^2 = 256000
(a+b)*(a-b) = 256000
1000*(a-b) = 256000.... [sub value of (a+b) from (i)]
a - b = 256 ......(ii)
(i) + (ii)
2a = 1256
a = 1256/2 = 628
a+ b = 1000
b = 1000 - a = 1000 - 628 = 372
Hence numbers are 628, 372
Hope it helps.
