The numbers are 1000 and 600.

Explanation:

Let the first number be x and the second number be y.

Given : The sum of two numbers is 1600.

i.e. x+y=1600   (1)

12% of one number = 0.012x

20% of the other number = 0.20y

If 12% of one is equal to 20% of the other

\Rightarrow\ 0.12x=0.20y\\\\\Rightarrow\ y=\dfrac{0.12x}{0.20}=0.6x

Put y=0.6x in (1) , we get

x+0.6x=1600

x(1.6)=1600

x=\dfrac{1600}{1.6}=1000

From (1) , y= 600

Hence, the numbers are 1000 and 600.
