It is given that two numbers have a sum of 17 and their product is 72.

We have to determine the numbers.

  • Let us assume that the two numbers are x and y
  • So, as per the condition given in the question

x + y = 17 ----(1)

x·y = 72 -----(2)

  • We will write y in  terms of x from equation 1.

y = 17 - x

  • now we will put this value in equation 2

x (17 - x) = 72

17x - x²= 72

-x² + 17x - 72 = 0

Solving this equation we will get the value of x=8,9

Now, if x = 8

Then y = 17 - 8

           = 9

If x= 9

Then y = 17 - 9

          = 8

So, the two numbers will be 8 and 9.

As we know that ;

given :

the sum of two numbers is 17

Their product is 72

Find out :

What are the two numbers?

Let us :

we can consider two numbers are x and y

So,

x + y = 17 ----(1)

x·y = 72 -----(2)

We will write y in terms of x from equation 1.

y = 17 - x

by putting this value in equation 2

x (17 - x) = 72

17x - x²= 72

-x² + 17x - 72 = 0

Now

 if x = 8

Then

y = 17 - 8

  = 9

Hence,  8 and 9 are the two numbers.
