Let the numbers be x and y.

x+y=18

x−y=2

→y=18−x

x−(18−x)=2

x−18+x=2

2x−18=2

2x=20

x=10

∴10+y=18

y=8

Hence, the two numbers are 8 and 10.

Hopefully this helps!

it is given that the sum of two number is 18

x+y=18

x=18-y

x-y=2

(18-y)-y=2

18+2y=2

2y=18-2

2y=16

y=8

now x+8=18

x=18-8

x=10
