Question:-

The sum of two numbers is 20 and their difference is 4. Find the greater number.

Solution:-

Given,

  • Sum of two numbers is 20 and the difference between the two numbers is 4.

Sum of x , y:-

  • x + y = 20 ...... ( 1 )

Difference between x , y:-

  • x - y = 4 ......... ( 2 )

Now,

Add add the equation ( 1 ) and ( 2 )

x + y = 20

x y = 4

2x = 24

x = 24/2

\boxed{x = 12}

Substitute x in equation ( 1 )

x + y = 20

12 + y = 20

y = 20 - 12

\boxed{y = 8}

Verification:-

Given,

Difference between two numbers is 4.

20 - 12 = 4

And,

Substitute x , y in equation ( 1 )

12 + 8 = 20

20 = 20
