Answer:-

Given:

Sum of two numbers = 20

One number is 4 times the other.

Let the first number be x and the other be y.

According to the question,

  • x + y = 20 -- equation (1)
  • x = 4y → x - 4y = 0. -- equation (2).

Subtract equation (2) from (1).

⟹ x + y - (x - 4y) = 20 - 0

⟹ x + y - x + 4y = 20

⟹ 5y = 20

⟹ y = 20/5

⟹ y = 4

Substitute the value of y in equation (1).

⟹ x + 4 = 20

⟹ x = 20 - 4

⟹ x = 16

The larger number is 16.
