Let one no. be 'x' and the other be 'y'.

The sum of two no.s is 25

x + y = 25 → 1

One of the no.s exceeds the other by 9

∴ x = y + 9

Substituting in 1,

     x + y = 25

y + 9 + y = 25

    2y + 9 = 25

           2y = 25 - 9

             y = 16 ÷ 2

            ∴ y = 8

    x = y + 9

     x = 8 + 9

  ∴ x = 17
