let the larger number be x
Let the smaller number be y
Therefore, x+y=26
X-y=8
Adding both eqns
X = 34
Y =8
The smaller number is 8

Answer :

9

Solution :

Let the two numbers be x and y such that x > y .

Now ,

It is given that , the sum of two numbers is 26 .

Thus ,

x + y = 26 ---------(1)

Also ,

It is given that , the difference between the two numbers is 8 .

Thus ,

x - y = 8 ----------(2)

Now ,

Adding eq-(1) and (2) , we get ;

=> x + y + x - y = 26 + 8

=> 2x = 34

=> x = 34/2

=> x = 17

Now ,

Putting x = 17 in eq-(1) , we get ;

=> x + y = 26

=> 17 + y = 26

=> y = 26 - 17

=> y = 9

Hence ,

Smaller number is 9 .
