Given,

The sum of two numbers is 40 and the difference between them is 14.

To Find,

The numbers.

Solution:

Let the lesser no. be x and the greater no. be x + 14.

Forming an equation,

x + x + 14 = 40

2x + 14 = 40

2x = 40 - 14

2x = 26

Therefore, x = 26/2 = 13

So the numbers are:

x = 13

x + 14 = 13 + 14 = 27

Therefore the numbers are 13 and 27.

Verification:

Substituting the values in the equation,

x + x + 14 = 40

= 13 + 13 + 14 = 40

40 = 40

LHS = RHS

Also,

It is given that that the difference between the two numbers is 14.

27 - 13 = 14

14 = 14

LHS = RHS

Hence Verified!
