Step-by-step explanation:

According to the question we have two equations:-

Suppose two numbers are x and y and larger number is x, then

x + y = 48 1st equation and

x = 3y

or x - 3y = 0 our 2nd equation

Now we multiply 1st equation with -1, then we get:-

-x - y = -48 by adding 2nd equation we get:-

-3y -y = -48 or -4y = -48 or y = -48/-4 = 12

So, y = 12 and x = 36 ( because x + y = 48)

So, our answer is 12 & 36

Answer is 12 & 36.

This is the method.

As given,

Suppose the numbers are, x and y.

So, x+y=48……(1)

And one number is 3 times as large as the other.

So , x=3y……….(2)

Now if put value of x from result (2) to result (1) then,

3y+y=48

So, y= 12

And So, x=3y=3(12)= 36

Answer will be 12 and 36.
