the sum of two numbers is 72, and one of them is 5 times the other . What are the two numbers?

case 1 -

x + y = 72. -(1)

case 2 -

x = 5y. -(2)

putting eq. 2 in eq. 1 we get ,

5y + y = 72
6y = 72
y = 12

from eq .2 we get ,
x = 5y
x = 5×12
x = 60

hence the two no. are 60 and 12 .
