Step-by-step explanation:-

The sum of two numbers is 8

Let the two numbers be x and y assuming x is the greater number

According to the question,

x + y = 8 ------------ (i)

Their sum is four times their difference

⇒ x + y = 4(x -y) -------(ii)

⇒ x + y = 4x - 4y

⇒ 5y = 3x

⇒ y = 3x/5 --------------(iii)

Substituting the value of y from eq (iii) in eq (i)

⇒ x + 3x/5 = 8

⇒ 5x+ 3x = 40

⇒ 8x = 40

⇒ x = 5

Putting the value of x in eq (iii)

⇒ y = 3 × 5/5

⇒ y = 3

Hence, the value of x = 5 and y = 3.
